The 80 years of the Republic. Mattarella: "The Constitution is our common home"

“Eighty years of service to the country”. Round number birthday for the Italian Republicwhich celebrates the anniversary in a traditional way, with the gift of Sergio Mattarella to the unknown soldier, the overflight of Frecce Tricolori and the military parade at the Imperial Forums.

But also with the ‘I Volti della Repubblica’ event, which, in Piazza del Quirinale, will retrace the history of Italy since 1946 this evening. A sort of collective story with the big Italians of music, dance, theater and cinema and with the champions of sport. A party that ‘leaves the palace’ and takes to the streets, with giant screens in over a thousand Italian municipalities, organized together with the ANCI.

Today Italy celebrates “not only a historical anniversary but a moment of great significance”, says the President of the Republic“which renews the collective commitment to the affirmation, protection and full implementation of the values ​​that constitute the fulcrum of the Constitution, the ‘common home’ that guarantees the life of the national community, the rights, while at the same time recalling our duties of solidarity”.

The value of 2 June 1946

“Eighty years have passed since that 2 June 1946 which marked the completion by Italians of an unprecedented act of freedom”, he states Mattarellain his message to the Chief of Staff, Luciano Portolano. “With universal suffrage, women and men, together for the first time – he underlines -, decided to leave behind the rubble of war and the atrocities of an oppressive and totalitarian regime, to start the reconstruction of a free, democratic, republican country”.

International remembrance and commitment

“On the eightieth anniversary of the Republic – continues the head of State -, we honor the memory of the soldiers who, with the combat groups, departments which, with self-denial and valor they fought in the War of Liberation, they were among the protagonists of the rebirth of Italy, restoring honor and freedom to the nation”. “There cannot be true peace as long as hotbeds of threat remain and there cannot be true well-being if even just a part of humanity is forced to live in precariousness”, remarks the President of the Republic, reiterating how “Italy, with Europe, is committed to restoring the value of rules in the life of the international community”. In Piazza Venezia, in Rome, the ceremony opens with the traditional deposition by the head of state laurel wreath on the shrine of the unknown soldier at the Altar of the Fatherland.

At the celebrations, underlined by the passage of Frecce Tricoloriattended by the Minister of Defense, Guido Crosettothe presidents of the Senate and the House, Ignazio La Russa e Lorenzo Fontanathe Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloniand the President of the Constitutional Court, Giovanni Amoroso. La Russa remembers the “historic vote” of 2 June 1946, and asks to renew “with pride” the homage to that “choice”.
