Not long after the incident, Martinjak himself explained his decision in a comment on Facebook:

“Here is my answer. The man constantly provoked my players, and at one point in the game all his teammates ran onto the field against one of our players who is also my godfather. When I started to scold them for acting, he literally got in my face, mentioned my mother and said that I was a bitch, to which I replied Unfortunately, I reacted the way I did. We apologized to each other afterwards, he for the headbutt. It was my fault that I didn’t do it. The whole tournament was against my team, even though we clearly outclassed everyone else.”

And then, in a new post, he apologized.

“First of all, I want to express my sincere regret for the incident that happened during the final of the Goat League tournament. I am aware that my behavior at that moment was inappropriate and that as a professional athlete, who has been building his career for years and represented Croatia on the international stage, I must be an example of self-control and sportsmanship regardless of the circumstances. I am sorry that the situation in which he was injured I wish Tomislav a speedy and successful recovery. No one comes to witness such scenes. At this moment, I do not want to go into the details of the event itself. I think it is important that the situation is looked at in its entirety and without additional tension responsibility for my reaction and I am aware that I had to act differently. Sport gave me a second chance and helped me become a better person. That is why I want this incident not to happen again and I will do everything necessary to resolve the situation with Tomislav and the organizers once again. teammates, fans and everyone who was disappointed by this event.”
