La Jornada: Spain will increase its investment in the country; “there is legal certainty”

Mexico is a reliable port for investments, as well as a top-level strategic partner that offers great short and long-term opportunities. In the recent year, our country became the second country in which Spanish companies invest the most, and its commitment is to redouble the bet, diplomats and directors of the private initiative of the European country confirmed yesterday.

The third edition of the “Barometer on climate and prospects for Spanish investment in Mexico”, carried out by the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Mexico, indicates that last year the country consolidated itself as the second largest recipient of Spanish private flows, with an accumulated amount that exceeds 68.8 billion euros and represents more than 10 percent of Spanish direct investment abroad.

The owners of private capital, the executives pointed out, have a positive perspective on Mexico and observe certainty in legal security. They see, in the short term, global uncertainty as the main obstacle to overcome, particularly the new trade policies implemented by the United States.

“The Spanish investment car has gasoline because there is a good level of investment and support from the headquarters in Madrid, Barcelona or Bilbao. In addition, the fuel that drives investment is clean because it is responsible, transparent and committed to the long term,” said Antonio Basagoiti, president of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Mexico.

The barometer data shows that the sectors that invest the most in Mexico are financial services, the logistics industry, metallurgy and energy.

In 2025 alone, Spain’s gross direct investment into Mexico stood at 3.3 billion euros, positioning our nation as the second destination that receives the most resources from Spanish capital, a situation that had only occurred in 2004 and 2018.

Aspects to optimize

The document details that the outlook for 2026 is favorable, and the main determining factor for investment is not in the domestic sphere, but in the international environment.

“The evolution of United States trade policy, geopolitical tensions and exchange rate volatility are consolidated as the factors with the greatest impact on business decisions in a scenario in which the Mexican economy maintains high synchronization with the US cycle.”

In turn, the institutional environment “does not act as a brake on investment, but it does condition its execution, since companies identify additional costs and operational frictions associated with regulatory complexity, administrative burden and uncertainty in the application of some standards, which affects the efficiency of the projects, but does not alter their viability.

“In this area, legal certainty shows a positive evolution, while taxation continues to be an element of dissatisfaction, although with a limited impact on investment decisions,” he added.

The event was attended by the Spanish ambassador to Mexico, Juan Duarte Cuadrado, who attributed the performance of Spanish investment to the country’s ability to give confidence to companies in a complex environment.
