Google Wallet will allow digital identification in several countries of the European Union starting this summer

Google has announced that Google Wallet will allow you to identify yourself digitally in certain countries of the European Union starting this summer, and will include a new form of user age verification when collaborating with Sparkasse bank.

The technology giant explains from its blog that “identity documents allow users to securely prove their age and identity“. This new operation was previously launched in Brazil, India, Taiwan and the United Kingdom.

Google’s goal now is to expand ID passes to more countries, although has not really mentioned which ones will be able to access this new experience of the Wallet app, states that it will be available in “some member countries of the European Union.”

Google refers to identity passes as the technical term for digital versions of official documents such as an ID, passport or driving license.

In fact, The European Union already has the project called European Digital Identity Portfolio underway (EU Digital Identity Wallet), and in Spain, under the framework of community regulations, the Beta Digital Wallet, which will allow age verification on the internet, carrying out administrative procedures and enjoying day-to-day public and private services, both in Spain and in any other EU country.

Digital identification through Google Wallet, as an alternative from the technology giant to the European Digital Identity Wallet, will have a more commercial objectivefrom proving that you are of legal age to checking into a hotel or identifying yourself to pick up a package.

Wallet will also include the ability for customers of the German bank Sparkasse have an easy and secure way to prove their age, lor that will make it easier for them to verify it without having to share sensitive details such as their name, address or date of birth.

Google has been working on age verification since early 2025 and in April That same year it introduced Zero Knowledge Proof technology (zero knowledge proof) which allows Wallet to be able to use the user’s digital ID to verify their age.

In Google’s official documentation you can read that “ZKP is a cryptographic method that allows users to prove a claim (“I am over 18 years old”) without revealing the actual underlying data“.

The technology giant has also announced that it is making the payment process (checkout) easier with Google Pay, and that Updated Secure Payment Authentication feature so that users in the European Union can shop on European websites using biometric verification only. This will avoid the need to enter one-time passwords or go through additional identity verification pages.
