Mapfre Foundation inaugurates photographic exhibitions of Richard Avedon and the work of Alejandro Cartagena

Fundación Mapfre has inaugurated two exhibitions this Thursday, ‘American West’ from the perspective of Richard Avedon, and a complete tour of the work of Alejandro Cartagena and his main series.

In the case of the American photographer, the entity is hosting the exhibition from this Saturday, June 6 until next September and it will recover the series ‘In the American West’ (1985), hailed as Avedon’s “masterpiece.”

“This project arose from a commission proposed in 1979 by the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth (Texas), which culminated in the publication of a book and the organization of an exhibition at said museum in 1985,” explained the Mapfre Foundation.

In this case, the one hundred and ten reference copies that the author himself selected and worked with his team both for the preparation of the copies for that exhibition and for the publication that accompanied it are exhibited.

Likewise, ‘Alejandro Cartagena: Ground Rules’ can be seen until August 30 and is the first exhibition that covers the entire work of this artist born in Santo Domingo (Dominican Republic), although based in Monterrey (Mexico).

In his more than twenty years of experience in photography, Cartagena constructs his work in the form of series. “It is in the accumulation, repetition and variation, rather than in the individual image, that the meaning of its proposals is found,” adds the Foundation.

The exhibition is conceived as an in-depth tour of the different stages of the author’s production and allows us to understand the evolution and coherence of his work over time.
