German Foreign Minister: “Our support for Ukraine and Israel could cost us a seat in the UN Security Council”

For the first time in its history, Germany failed to achieve election as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council. In the secret ballot, it received only 104 votes; the representatives of Western Europe for the next two years will be surpassed by Portugal and Austria.

Germany, a member of the G7 and the largest economic power in Europe, is not included in the list of permanent members of the Security Council – these are the United States, Russia, France, Great Britain and China. However, she was successfully elected to the Security Council six times. Germany ranks second in terms of contributions to the UN budget.

“This is a tangible defeat. The reason is our support for Ukraine, because Russia does not want to hear such a voice in the Security Council. It is no secret that Russia is fomenting discontent with Germany,” said German Foreign Minister Johann Wadeful.

“We have always taken a clear position on certain issues. Not all UN members share this position. The fact that Germany always shows special responsibility towards Israel and the Middle East could also cost us votes,” he added.
