He’s on the way to peak fitness,” said Nagelsmann around 24 hours before the game: “Nevertheless, we don’t want to take any risks tomorrow.”
In top shape for the first group game
After the muscle hardening in his left calf, Neuer should continue to be rested in order to increase the probability that the tournament will go perfectly and nothing will happen, the national coach went on to say in view of Neuer’s previous injury to his calf this year. Neuer should start team training next week so that he is in top shape for the first group game.
Oliver Baumann will once again be used in the dress rehearsal against the World Cup hosts. Neuer will therefore not play his 125th international match until the opening game of the World Cup on June 14th in Houston against Curaçao. Nagelsmann brought the German record goalkeeper back to the DFB team almost two years after his retirement.
In Chicago, Neuer continued his so-called “load building”. Social media images and DFB videos showed the Bayern goalkeeper during shooting exercises. Neuer also appeared very relaxed while walking on the promenade of Lake Michigan with his Munich colleague Jonas Urbig.
