Starting this Tuesday, and throughout the week, the Ministry of Culture promotes the celebration of the European Archeology Days to highlight archaeological work and bring the heritage related to the history and cultures of the past closer to citizens.
The program of activities includes the ‘Open for excavation’ initiative, which allows the public to visit archaeological sites in the process of excavation, as well as children’s workshops, conferences for professionals or workshops and visits for people interested in the subject.
This year, in addition, new institutions such as National Heritage or the Gallery of the Royal Collections have joined the initiative with more activity proposals. The complete program is available on the website of the European Conference in Spain.
For its part, Culture, in collaboration with the Principality of Asturias, organizes the visit ‘The astronomical landscape of the Castro de Coaña site’, to learn how the communities that inhabited that place 2,000 years ago organized their lives and rituals following the solar cycles.
The activity will culminate with an astronomical observation, turning this old fort into a privileged observatory under the stars. The activity will take place on June 13 and prior registration is required.
In addition, the Institute of Cultural Heritage of Spain (IPCE) organizes a series of online conferences on June 11 and 12 under the title ‘Roots that transform: archeology and development’. They will address archaeological practice from new perspectives such as community, participatory archeology, for development or in conflict zones.
ACTIVITIES IN STATE MUSEUMS
The state museums of the Ministry of Culture have also scheduled activities to bring archeology closer to the public. The National Archaeological Museum (MAN) will offer special visits to its internal spaces starting June 9, upon registration.
In addition, it will host the ‘Paleoficción’ conference on June 10 and a round table on ‘Archaeology and international cooperation: a century of Spanish-French collaboration in Spain’ that will take place on June 18.
On the weekend of June 13 and 14, it will also offer workshops on Roman mosaic and others for family audiences. The complete program of activities can be consulted on their website.
Also in Madrid, the Museum of America organizes a workshop for family audiences, which under the title ‘Archaeologists of the Beyond’, will present the symbology of death in the Andean and Mesoamerican peoples on Sunday the 14th.
The National Museum of Roman Art in Mérida focuses this year on goldsmithing with a commented visit on Sunday, June 12, a jewelry workshop on Monday 13, and the recreation of ‘The Roman Woman’s Dressing Table’ on Tuesday, June 14.
