The US Department of Defense has updated its list of entities and companies supplying goods and services to the Chinese military to include e-commerce giant Alibaba, electric vehicle maker BYD and technology company Baidu.
According to the update, all three companies qualify as “military-civil suppliers to the Chinese defense industrial complex.”
Internet giant Tencent was added to the list last year, and now all three of China’s leading artificial intelligence companies are on the list.
Inclusion on the list itself does not entail automatic legal consequences, but the Pentagon limits the access of those involved to military tenders and research grants from the American defense department.
In addition, the list serves as a warning to investors and a “red flag” prior to trade restrictions by the federal government.
