‘Mondays in the Sun’ arrives at Teatros del Canal to “rehumanize society” in the face of capitalism and job insecurity

The theatrical adaptation of ‘Mondays in the sun’ will come to the Canal Theaters the next June 17 with a renewed look at job insecurity, the loss of identity linked to employment and the need to recover human ties in an increasingly individualized society.

This is how the playwright defended it this Thursday Ignacio del Moral during the presentation of the work in which he has defended the need for a “rehumanization of society” in the face of an economic model that, in his opinion, has become increasingly “dehumanized” and that “ends up devouring people.”

“This dehumanized capitalism that exists now, which is speculative, is devouring people and those who have work. It is devouring upwards and staying on its own island. I believe that this can be combated by rehumanizing society and recovering contact,” said del Moral.

The play, which can be seen at the Teatros del Canal from June 17 to 28, brings to the stage a story focused on the consequences of unemployment and lack of opportunities, showing how these affect daily life, self-esteem and personal relationships.

The show is directed by Javier Hernández-Simón who has assured that the montage does not seek to reproduce the homonymous film by Fernando León de Aranoa but rather to construct “new identities” for characters already known to the public.

“In a society based, increasingly, not only on success but above all on the way in which that success becomes a form of identity, I wonder what happens to those people who have been left behind. Those men and women who, due to various circumstances, have been excluded from that showcase that is our way of life,” he explained.

In this sense, Hernández-Simón has defended that ‘Mondays in the sun’ aims to offer the public “hope” to continue walking. Likewise, del Moral has stressed that the main virtue of the adaptation is precisely its independence from the film. “It is not the movie put in 3D“, he stated, while explaining that the show tells “the same thing, with the same words”, but from a different scenic conception.

Del Moral has pointed out that the adaptation work has consisted of analyzing which conflicts remain valid more than two decades after the film’s release and which have changed. In this sense, he highlighted that Identity linked to employment continues to be a central element in a society that continues to be “mercantilistic”“, while human support networks have weakened compared to the time in which the story is set.

PRECARITY, HUMOR AND SENSE OF COMMUNITY

‘Mondays in the Sun’ features Mónica Asensio, Marcial Álvarez, José Luis Torrijo, Fernando Cayo, Fermi Herrero, Fernando Huesca, César Sánchez and Lidia Navarro in its cast, who has highlighted that her character represents the impact that male unemployment has on the family environment and on women who support the home in contexts of precariousness.

For his part, the actor Marcial Álvarez has stressed that the performance speaks of the search for dignity and social recognition. “They don’t just want a job; they want to feel useful,” has stated.

Finally, Fernando Cayo has described the work as “a contemporary classic” and recalled that the production has already been on tour for two years with full theaters throughout Spain. “One of the great wisdoms of the text is to talk about profound things in a luminous way,” he said.

“The main message that the work conveys has to do with the importance of being together,” commented, before highlighting that the union between people continues to be essential to overcome collective difficulties, as is currently the case in different social and professional sectors.
