US President Donald Trump said he had canceled strikes against Iran planned for the evening. He wrote about this on his social network Truth Social.
According to Trump, proposals for the deal were submitted to Iran’s senior leadership for consideration, and the leadership approved them.
“As negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran have reached its senior leadership and have been confirmed, I, as President of the United States of America, have canceled the bombing and strikes against Iran planned for this evening,” he wrote.
According to Trump, all parties involved in the negotiations agreed on both the general outline of the deal and its final terms. Among the participants in the negotiations, he named Israel, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt and “other countries.”
Trump said the naval blockade will remain in place until an agreement is reached. “The time and place of its signing will be announced soon,” he said.
Haaretz writes that Jerusalem was surprised by Trump’s statement. Throughout the day, Israel believed that the window of opportunity for a deal was gradually closing and that the diplomatic initiative promoted by Trump was leading it to a dead end.
Later, during a call with reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said that he had previously spoken with a number of leaders in the region, including Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
On the night of June 12, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office reported that Benjamin Netanyahu had a conversation with US President Donald Trump about “an emerging memorandum of understanding with Iran that should open the way to negotiations.” The office said in a statement: “While Israel is not a party to the memorandum of understanding, the Prime Minister commended President Trump for his commitment to ensuring that the final negotiated agreement includes provisions for the removal of enriched material, the dismantling of enrichment infrastructure, limiting missile production and ending Iran’s support for its terrorist proxies in the region.”
