The fandom of the Off Campus series got out of hand

Romantic college drama Off Campus has charmed viewers around the world.

So intensely that fans have had to be warned. On Thursday, the series is official your social account bet to the fans and asked them to stop harassing the actors and their close circle.

Although fandom is part of it, real people must be treated with respect, the publication stressed. It did not specify in more detail what kind of harassment had occurred.

Time was not the first.

Last summer, the same streaming service had to be reminded of the same things. At that time, they were in the tikunknoka box The Summer I Turned Pretty actors of the series.

For inappropriate behavior was defined bullying, hate speech, breaking into filming locations and sharing personal information.

Both series are aimed at young people and are romantic in nature.

In The Summer I Turned Pretty, Isabel “Belly” Conklin (Lola Tung, right) spends her summer vacation in a coastal town.

Also research recognize the dark side of fandom, where admiration turns into obsessive behavior. This kind of fandom is not completely foreign in Finland either.

Many remember the Dingo phenomenon of the 1980s and the hordes of fans that appeared at the band members’ doors.

In the age of the Internet, fandom becomes more extravagant and the boundaries blur, fan researcher Tanja Välisalo states.

“In the old days, perhaps it was thought that this kind of thing was part of the public.”

First of all, gossip, personal information and speculation reach a huge mass of people in an instant.

Second, social media stimulates interest: anyone can instantly find a community of like-minded people that spreads around the world. Fans willingly echo each other.

Particularly interesting Off Campus -series, according to Välisalo, however, is that the authors have interfered with the behavior of the fans.

“In the old days, perhaps it was thought that this kind of thing was part of the publicity. The production company might have been afraid that it would drive away the fans if it tried to set limits,” Välisalo describes.

Pushing boundaries is the bread of the new generation. You don’t have to put up with everything at the expense of your own well-being, says the spirit of the times.

Especially relationships, imagined or real, seem to bring out the emotions of the fanbase.

Perhaps the most brutal example Hailey Bieber’s treatment received. In March 2023 Justin Bieber’s ex-girlfriend, singer Selena Gomez asked fans to stop sending death threats and hateful messages to Hailey Bieber, his ex’s current spouse.
