Israeli airline El Al announced the signing of an agreement with Elon Musk’s Starlink to provide high-speed Internet access on board aircraft. The financial terms of the deal were not disclosed, Reuters reported on Monday, June 15.
The installation of Starlink equipment on the Israeli air carrier’s aircraft will begin in 2027. Passengers will be provided with high-speed Internet access free of charge.
In recent years, airlines have been aggressively competing for premium customers, and having fast Wi-Fi during the flight has become one of the important advantages.
Starlink, part of SpaceX, provides Internet access through a network of low-orbit satellites. According to Ookla, this technology provides connection speeds several times higher than traditional satellite systems.
El Al CEO Levi Halevi said the introduction of Starlink will allow passengers to stay connected during flights, use streaming services, and work and communicate without interruption.
EL AL’s long-haul fleet consists primarily of modern Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and the company plans to further expand it. In addition, the carrier has ordered Boeing 737 MAX aircraft for European routes.
