At the G7 meeting, a surprising gift for Trump – everyone saw the reaction

At nine o’clock in the morning at the meeting of the leaders of the G7 countries in Évian-les-Bains, France, a working session was supposed to begin, the focus of which was the building of peace in Ukraine and the security of Europe. The leaders of the G7 countries (France, Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, Great Britain and the United States) and the presidents of the Commission and the European Council participated in the meeting.

Other leaders had to wait an extraordinarily long time when the US president Donald Trump and the president of France, the host country of the meeting Emmanuel Macron and the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyi let themselves wait.

After more than half an hour had passed, the Prime Minister of Japan Sanae Takaichi started looking at his watch. Instead, the Prime Minister of Italy Giorgia Meloni made the other leaders laugh with some vividly told story.

Trump, Zelenskyi and Macron did not arrive at the round negotiating table until 9:47 a.m. The media was told that the reason for the delay of almost an hour was the bilateral meeting between Macron and Zelensky.

As soon as Trump arrived in the meeting room, he received from the German chancellor Friedrich Merziltä as a gift, the jersey number 47 of the German national football team. The number refers to Trump being the 47th president of the United States in his second term.

Trump accepted the jersey with a slightly forced smile. The president of the United States seems to prefer more violent sports to European football, especially free games. In honor of Trump’s 80th birthday, the UFC Freedom 250 boxing event was recently held at the White House, and Trump said in Évian that he likes boxing more than football.

By donating the jersey, Merz was apparently trying to mend his relationship with Trump. The relationship between the two got a big rift in April, when Merz barked exceptionally directly at the American Iran strategy during Marsberg’s school visit and said that the whole situation makes the United States look weak.

The criticism did not go unnoticed by Trump, as shortly after Merz’s speech, the United States announced that it would withdraw approximately 5,000 troops from Germany.

The happiest participant in the round table conference room at the Hôtel Royal seemed to be the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyiwho hugged his European colleagues with a big smile.

Zelenskyi’s goal in Évian is to arrange a bilateral meeting with Trump.

A live TV broadcast of the G7 meeting on Tuesday morning saw Macron promise to try to organize one as the pair strolled through the gardens of the heavily guarded meeting hotel.

Trump, on the other hand, already promised on Monday that the United States will shift its diplomatic focus back to Ukraine after reaching a peace agreement with Iran.

“Now that this (Iran) is taken care of, we’re going to focus on that (Ukraine peace) and see if we can get it done,” Trump said in Évian.

In addition to promoting peace, Zelenskyi aims to secure more military support for his armed forces. He especially hopes for American Patriot anti-aircraft missiles so that Russian airstrikes can be countered more effectively than at present. The president of Ukraine also wants to increase economic pressure on Russia, so that the president Vladimir Putin would finally agree to peace negotiations.

However, the problem with the joint embargo is that, under Trump’s leadership, the United States has granted three consecutive exemptions to Russian oil, which Putin uses to finance his war economy, due to the oil crisis caused by Iran.

Instead, the EU has tightened the frontline of expulsion. Last week, the Commission already presented the 21st sanctions package for Russiaalthough it still awaits the approval of the EU member states.

Chairman of the Commission Ursula von der Leyen is trying to promote, along with additional funding for Ukraine, a complete ban on the sea services of Russian oil tankers at the G7 meeting in Évian, which has also been Finland’s goal.

Due to the critical attitude of the EU countries Greece and Malta, the total ban of maritime services has not been promoted in the composition of the EU countries, despite the efforts, and therefore it was decided to tie the total ban to the wider G7 agreement, which, however, does not seem very likely.
