Schlein from Prodi to Bologna: two and a half hours of discussion on the future of the centre-left

Elly Schlein and Romano Prodi they could only “start again” from Bologna, the city of both of them (even if the secretary of the Democratic Party is Bolognese “by adoption”), to discuss the future of the center-left and the unknown of Roberto Vannacci. The meeting, at the professor’s house, took place this morning, as revealed by the former Prime Minister himself, speaking on “Repubblica delle Idee”, currently underway in the Emilian capital.

Elly Schlein “was there this morning, we did two and a half hours of beautiful Bolognese conversationwe even talked about Vannacci, think about it, we also had time to waste”, says Prodi from the stage of the festival organized by La Repubblica, with the secretary who witnessed the former prime minister’s speech in the audience.

The center-left construction site and the no to broad agreements

Schlein, who appears on the stage in Piazza Maggiore a few hours later, confirms: “With the professor we said that the program must be built together with people“. Then he relaunches: “We will only go to government with the progressive coalitionwe have no availability at broad understandings or something that resembles us“. At the center of the conversation with Prodi, according to what Schlein said, were also the “constitutional foundations” for building the centre-left programme, industrial policy, European issues. A face-to-face meeting between the Dem leader and the former prime minister, which comes after months in which Prodi had not failed to make his observations on the future and the line of Pde of the so-called “long field” of the centre-left. A role of “goad”, played by the founder of the Ulivo, also in the debate on “Repubblica delle Idee”. “If we do it only on personalisms, the agreement will never be there”, he said regarding the pact in the coalition of progressives.

The unity of the opposition against the centre-right

And, therefore, in the background of Schlein’s “visit” to Prodi, there is the “construction site” of thealternative to the centre-right government. On this point, the secretary of the Democratic Party insists: “We continue with an idea, that of being stubbornly unitaryunity is the precondition for beating these right-wingers”. And again: “Finally let’s talk about the divisions of the right because in recent years we have brought together the progressive camp”. Schlein is convinced that the centre-left coalition “is already further ahead than the one that governs today, and for this reason we must not make mistakes”.

And he reiterated: “We are already ready, let’s give ourselves the right methodlet’s not let the desire that saw our country mobilize to implement the Constitution fray.” We therefore also start again from the no to the centre-right electoral law proposal. “We will form a wall with all the oppositions against this electoral law, we have presented more than three hundred amendments shared by Pd, M5s, Avs, Italia viva and +Europa. You have to be locked in the Palace to think that the electoral law is a priority of the country, they understood that we can win”, urged Schlein.

The lunge on the Constitution and the dialogue on AI

There is no lack of “jab” to the Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni on “More books, more free”: “Giorgia Meloni also swore on the Constitution and the Constitution is anti-fascist. Fascism is not an opinion, it is a crime, in a Constitution written by those who were part of the Resistance”.

To the prime minister, however, Schlein lends a hand on the need to standardize Artificial Intelligence: “I believe that together, including with the Prime Minister, we must make a transversal commitment to the responsible use of our images in the next electoral campaign. Then we must work to regulate AI at European and national level“. But the conclusion is, again, on the centre-left: “At any time we go to vote we will be ready”.
