The Associated Press agency recorded this Wednesday (17) images of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva speaking negatively about the United States and the American president, Donald Trump.
The images were captured in the American agency’s live broadcast of the G7 summit, which is being held in Évian-les-Bains, France. Lula made the comments in conversation with the president of South Korea, Lee Jae-myung.
Although the audio is low and noisy, it is possible to hear the PT member speaking to the South Korean president: “Brazil has no disagreement with any country. We don’t want a fight. I don’t like fighting. But I can’t stand the behavior of the American government.”
At this point in the conversation, the PT member looks and signals in another direction, apparently, towards Trump.
“Behavior like an emperor”, says Lula, adding: “He thinks he can get up in the morning and give order to the whole world”. “Bad example for democracy”, concludes Lula, in reference to Trump.
This Wednesday, Lula and Trump quickly greeted each other at the G7 summit: images on social media showed the American president shaking the Brazilian’s hand and asking him if “he’s okay”, before moving on to say “good job”.
On Tuesday (16), during the photo session of the leaders of the G7 and guest countries, the two presidents had not greeted each other.
Lula and Trump met at the White House in early May, but since then the relationship between the two presidents has turned sour again.
The United States designated the Brazilian criminal groups Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC) and Comando Vermelho (CV) as terrorist organizations, which was classified by the PT government as disrespectful to national “sovereignty”.
After suspending most of the 50% tariff on Brazilian products imposed in 2025, the Trump administration signaled new tariffs on Brazil this month.
The Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR), an American government body, suggested a 25% surcharge on imports of Brazilian products, under the argument of unfair trade practices, and another 12.5% surcharge for Brazil and 59 other countries, alleging failures in the fight against goods produced with forced and slave labor.
