There is a postcard Sicily, made of sea, light, islands, Mediterranean luxury and exclusive holidays. And then there is the Sicily that Francesco Musolino chooses to tell in Rosso Panarea, a new novel published by Edizioni E/O (pp.240, 19 euros) and second investigation by inspector Giorgio Garboprotagonist presented for the first time in ‘Giallo Lipari’.
The title recalls one of the most glamorous islands of the Aeolian archipelago, but the novel works precisely on the reversal of that imagery: beneath the mundane surface, between fashion shows, regattas, influencers and assault journalism, an investigation opens that brings to light violence, digital misogyny and contemporary obsessions.
At the center of the story is the death of a young model, found on a beach. It is the first sign of a darker plan, linked to a macabre ritual and an organized hatred against women. Garbo thus delves into the forums and the languages of the incel galaxyradicalized male communities in which frustration is transformed into ideology and misogyny into revenge.
Misogyny and violence
Musolino uses the structure of noir to describe a social phenomenon: the violence that arises online, the commodification of the female body, the transformation of crime news into media consumption.
The novel is set a month after the events of Giallo Lipari. The action moves to Panarea, an island symbol of luxury and worldliness, but the investigation confirms the structure of the series: the Aeolian Islands not as an exotic setting or tourist backdrop – or at least not only – but a narrative microcosm in which beauty and restlessness coexist. Musolino’s Mediterranean is not pacified: it is a place crossed by contradictions, where the arrival of tourists, the power of social media and the fragility of relationships produce tensions ready to explode.
Inspector Garbo returns
The investigation is still led by Giorgio Garbo, a Milanese inspector transferred to the Aeolian Islands and renamed ‘u milanisi. Garbo is a character built on contrast: he comes from the North, he loves the fog, the mountains, skiing, urban order; instead he finds himself in an archipelago dominated by heat, sea, slowness and social codes that he struggles to decipher.
AND an analog detective in a world increasingly regulated by social media, telephones, stolen images and digital reputations. Precisely this distance makes it effective: Garbo observes, distrusts, stumbles upon clichés and observes what others take for granted.
With Giallo Lipari, Musolino introduced Garbo into an investigation that intertwined cyber stalking, revenge porn, fentanyl trafficking and high-class prostitution. Rosso Panarea continues that trajectory and raise the bar on the social sidemoving noir towards explicitly contemporary terrain: online hatred, male radicalization, the relationship between real violence and digital languages. Deputy Inspector Milena Russo also returns alongside Garbo, a central figure in the new investigation and a necessary counterpoint to the protagonist’s gaze.
Francesco Musolino, born in Messina in 1981, is a journalist and writer. He has collaborated with various national newspapers, published the novel ‘L’attimo prima’, the essay ‘The incredible curiosities of Sicily’, the children’s book ‘Myths and stories of the sea’ and, for Edizioni E/O, the Mediterranean noir Mare mosso, selected for the Scerbanenco Prize. He is also a creative writing teacher at the Holden School and creator of the non-profit project @Stoleggendo.
Rosso Panarea therefore presents itself as a novel of investigation, but also as a story about new forms of violence and on the way society looks at it, comments on it and often consumes it. Don’t expect the usual “holiday mystery” set in sunny Sicily: this is a story that uses the charm of the Aeolian Islands to show what usually remains outside the frame.
