The 26-year-old Czech tennis player Marketa Vondrousova was disqualified for 4 years for refusing to undergo an anti-doping test on December 3, 2025. The 2023 Wimbledon champion, former number 6 in the WTA ranking, was disqualified by an independent tribunal. Itia (International Tennis Integrity Agency) announced this in a note. During the proceedings Vondrousova attributed her decision to a particularly complex personal phase, characterized by strong depression. The court carefully evaluated these elements, also taking into account the statements of the person in charge of the control, but concluded that the circumstances exposed were not such as to exempt it from its responsibilities. For the judges, the explanations provided did not reach the level of credibility necessary to justify the contested behavior.
“We understand that the testing process may be inconvenient for athletes, but it is essential to safeguard the fairness of competitions – said Itia CEO Karen Moorhouse -. The safety of players and our staff is an absolute priority: staff are qualified, identifiable and operate following rigorous procedures. This case represents an important reminder for all athletes. Tests can take place at any time and place, and refusal carries very serious consequences”. The 26-year-old Czech’s disqualification will end on June 21, 2030, pending a probable appeal.
