More vacation for your money: These countries are cheaper than Austria

The purchasing power of domestic holidaymakers in the destinations mentioned is higher or lower than in Austria due to the different price levels. “Destinations in the north remain expensive, especially Iceland, but also Switzerland, where holidaymakers from Austria have around a third less purchasing power than at home,” said Statistics Austria General Director Manuela Lenk on Friday.

Bulgaria, Türkiye and Romania are particularly cheap

According to current calculations by Statistics Austria, in Bulgaria and Romania, travelers from Austria receive tourist benefits worth 186 euros and 155 euros respectively for 100 euros – more than one and a half times as much. In Hungary, the value of the holiday euro fell by 16 euros to 141 euros compared to the previous year – due to the appreciation of the forint against the euro. In Slovakia (123 euros), Slovenia (121 euros) and Croatia (119 euros), Austrian guests get around 20 percent more for their money than at home. Holiday destinations that are cheap for the Austrian wallet are Turkey (156 euros), Portugal (140 euros), Spain (132 euros), Greece (126 euros), Cyprus (125 euros), but also Italy (113 euros).

Iceland and Switzerland are still particularly expensive. For every 100 euros earned in this country, holidaymakers receive tourist products and services worth only 64 euros or 70 euros. This means a loss of purchasing power of around a third. Norway (73 euros), Denmark (80 euros), Sweden (90 euros) and Ireland (91 euros) are also more expensive compared to Austria.

Japan cheaper than last year, Australia and Mexico more expensive

When it comes to overseas destinations, the picture regarding currency developments is mixed. Vacations in Japan have become even cheaper: the value of 100 Austrian vacation euros rose by 16 percent to 144 euros compared to the previous year. The reason for this is the weak yen and low inflation in Japan. Australia, on the other hand, has become more expensive – there, 100 euros for vacation are only worth 87 euros. In Mexico it is also less than last year, but still 141 euros.
