There are no influencer screenings of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey

At its best an influencer’s social media post works like a recommendation from a friend.

Word of mouth recommendations are considered one of the most reliable forms of marketing. In Hollywood, it has already become a habit to organize influencer screenings, where the invited guests who participated share their – often laudatory – opinions about the film on their social media accounts.

Christopher Nolanin about the new direction The Odyssey (2026) is expected to be one of the film events of the year. The director is known for films, among other things Interstellar (2014) and Oppenheimer (2023) and from the Dark Knight trilogy (2005–2012).

Movie tells of Odysseus (Matt Damon), about a Greek hero who makes a long journey to return home from the Trojan War to his wife (Anne Hathaway) and his son (Tom Holland) luo.

Last week, the Universal studio announced that there will be no special screenings of Nolan’s new direction. Instead, advance screenings are primarily held for film critics.

Influencers recommendations based on advance screenings are not considered as reliable as in the past, because they appear too positive in relation to the quality of the films, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

For example Craig Gillespien Supergirlin (2026) overwhelmingly positive first reactions caused a strong backlash when the film was released.

A word-of-mouth recommendation only works if it feels sincere.

Praise from influencers often serves as a balancing factor for professional criticism. Reviews from film critics are more credible, but rarely as flattering.

According to Wired the critics themselves are delighted with Universal’s approach.

Nolanin the ambitious project has also attracted attention on social media. There has been discussion about, among other things, historical accuracy and the decision to cast a rapper Travis Scott.

Homer’s the epic story is thousands of years old, and adapting it is not an easy task even for Nolan himself. The film was shot in six countries and by a team of thousands of people.

Coming soon there are at least three hours of sword fights – and possibly more surprising line moves.

According to The New York Times Nolan sees that the audience is currently craving something new.

“The biggest risk is to play it safe,” says the director.

The Odyssey in theaters July 17.
