EU: Costa pushes for Mff 2028-34, more investments in research and competitiveness

It is “essential” that the Mff 2028-34 is approved “by the end of the year”, because the EU suffers from an “investment gap” and “we cannot delay the moment when we start to fill this gap”. The President of the European Council reiterates this Antonio Costaduring Les rencontres économiques in Aix-en-Provence, in Southern France, alongside the President of the ECB Christine Lagarde.

The new Multiannual Financial Framework 2028-34, Costa recalls, provides “a doubling of investments in research and competitiveness“. While in the Mff 2021-27 research and competitiveness account for approximately “one fifth” of the sums allocated to cohesion policy and the CAP, in the next Mff research and competitiveness will have “half” of the resources allocated to regional development and agricultural policy.
