ECB, Lagarde does not rule out early resignation

Christine Lagarde he said he did not rule out leaving presidency of the ECB before the end of his term in October 2027 to bring “a European voice” at the French presidential debate.

In an exclusive interview published online on the ‘Les Echos’ website, Lagarde (whose possible exit before the presidential elections had been anticipated in February by the Financial Times), believes that “the captain of the ECB ship must remain on board” in this “period of turbulence” caused by the war in the Middle East, in order to ensure price stability in the eurozone.

The conflict reignited inflation and forced the ECB to raise interest rates on June 11, after they had remained stable since July 2025.

Lagarde: “My early exit from the ECB is possible”

Asked about a possible early exit from the ECB if the situation calmed down, Christine Lagarde replied: “It’s possible. I believe that a European voice must be heard in the debate French presidential election“.

And he explained: “If a perspective were to emerge from this debate that diminishes France’s role in EuropeI think we should explain why this would be a painful road for our country and our citizens”, adding that a confrontation with some candidates in the coming months is “very likely”.
