Rubinyan will not continue to be the negotiator with Turkey if he is elected as the Speaker of the National Assembly

If elected, Ruben Rubinyan, the candidate of the ruling “Civil Agreement” party for the position of the new National Assembly Speaker, will not continue to be the representative of Armenia in the negotiations with Turkey. The deputy speaker of the acting parliament informed about it today in a conversation with journalists.

“Since I was elected as a candidate for the President of the National Assembly, if elected, I will obviously not continue to be a special representative of Armenia in the negotiations with Turkey,” Rubinyan stated.

“As far as I am aware, it is not yet known who will replace me as the envoy of the Armenian side, but the prime minister and the government will discuss,” said the NA vice-president.

The 36-year-old Ruben Rubinyan, Armenia’s envoy to the Armenian-Turkish negotiations, was chosen by the “Civil Agreement” as a candidate for the president of the National Assembly formed by the results of the June 7 elections last week.

After being selected as a candidate, Rubinyan responded to Azatut’s question about whether, since he is involved in the Armenian-Turkish negotiations, it is possible for anything to change here or not. – “I don’t know, I didn’t think about it, because that decision was made five minutes ago, we didn’t manage to address that issue in five minutes.”

The first meeting of the special representatives of Armenia and Turkey, Ruben Rubinyan and Serdar Kilic, took place in January 2022 in Moscow. The envoys meet regularly, but the main issue, the reopening of the border, which has been closed for more than 30 years, remains unresolved.
