The Japanese indie game “Meccha Chameleon” became a global sensation almost overnight. Launched on June 10th, this multiplayer hide & seek game sold over ten million copies in just 16 days and topped Steam’s sales charts. The story is all the more incredible because it was created by a two-person team in just two months, without a single cent invested in marketing.
Innovative hidesč which won streamers over
“Meccha Chameleon” is a modern version of the classic hide and seek game. The games are divided into search teams, whose goal is to find all the hidden games within the given time, and hide them. The keyč success lies in the unique mechanics: hide and control white figures that can be spray-painted to blend in with their surroundings. Players must manually apply colors to match a wall, painting, or other part of the map, leading to countless hilarious and ingenious moments. That creative freedom and humor have made the game extremely popular among streamers and on social networks, where viral clips have become everyday.
Fast development and zero advertising costs
Behind the phenomenon is a two-year Japanese team: Lemorion, author of maps and models, and developer Haganeiro. Development began only a day after Lemorion came up with the basic concept. The entire process took only two months, and the team achieved such speed by reusing elements from their previous games. They didn’t spend money on advertising, butć success was based on organic growth and game recommendations. For online multiplayer, they use the free Epic Online Services system, they have reduced costs and provided support for a large number of games.
Figures that defy industry standards
The commercial success is astounding. Priced at around five euros, the game generated an estimated $60 million gross in its first three weeks. This means that the developers, even after Steam’s share and taxes, made a big profit. According to some calculations, they earned about a million dollars for each day of the two-month development. At its peak, the game had more than 340,000 concurrent players, surpassing the popularity of big AAA titles like Apex Legends. “Meccha Chameleon” is proof that a well-executed, fun and accessible idea is sometimes better than big projects that start with millions of dollars.
