After the victory against Germany, Paraguay’s President Santiago Peña does not want to watch the World Cup round of 16 against France in the stadium due to superstition. “As president, I always receive an invitation to every single game. But I also have to say that I’m actually a little bit superstitious. That’s why I prefer to just watch the game from home,” the Paraguayan newspaper “Hoy” quoted the head of state of the South American country as saying.
Peña only went to the Paraguayan national team’s opening game, which the “Albirroja” clearly lost 4-1 to World Cup hosts USA. However, he was not there for the following group games against Turkey (1-0) and Australia (0-0).
Peña was missing against Germany
The Paraguayan president would actually have liked to travel to the game against Germany, but was unable to do so due to his hosting duties at the Mercosur summit in Asunción. The South Americans surprisingly eliminated Germany on penalties in the round of 16. Peña then declared a national holiday.
Paraguay has the chance to reach the last eight at a World Cup for the first time since 2010 in the game against the favored runner-up France on Saturday (11 p.m./CEST). President Peña wants to contribute in his own way to making this football miracle a reality.
