Mallorca: German holidaymaker (†70) drowns on holiday island

Mallorca – Tragic swimming accident on the holiday island: A German holidaymaker (70) drowned off Mallorca on Thursday morning. Despite attempting to resuscitate him for more than 40 minutes, rescue workers were unable to save his life.

The accident occurred at around 11.45 a.m. at Cala Domingos Petit in Calas de Mallorca. At the time of the accident the yellow warning flag was in effect due to the turbulent sea.

Warnings ignored

Like that Mallorca Magazine reported, the man still went into the water to swim a few laps. As he got further and further away from the shore, lifeguards called his attention with whistles. However, the holidaymaker is said not to have responded to the warnings.

A little later the man was floating motionless on the surface of the water. Lifeguards brought him to shore using a rescue board and immediately began CPR.

Relatives had to witness everything

Paramedics continued resuscitation measures. After more than 40 minutes, they determined the man was dead. The police identified the German and looked after a relative who had been with him on the beach during the accident.

The authorities repeatedly point out that warning flags on the beaches should be taken seriously. A yellow flag already means that swimming is associated with increased risks due to wind, currents or waves.
