The statement comes after US intelligence reported that Vladimir Putin’s regime was planning an “armed provocation” inside Poland to test NATO’s defenses.

“Poland is intensively preparing for several scenarios,” Tusk said, citing reports from allied intelligence services about possible Russian provocations aimed at testing the military alliance’s unity on its eastern border.

Faced with the growing threat, the Polish leader said he would urge NATO to recognize that protecting the European Union’s eastern border must be treated as a special strategic priority, even before new financial commitments to Kiev.

Ahead of the military alliance’s next summit in Ankara, he asked his country’s delegation to exercise “extreme caution” regarding any declaration of additional financial support for Ukraine.

“Not because I believe that Ukraine doesn’t need it, but because I believe that Poland has very important responsibilities regarding the entire eastern border of the European Union, and everyone should keep that in mind,” Tusk said.
