The doors of Buckingham Palace remain closed to Harry

Prince Harry’s return to the United Kingdom is once again tinged with controversy and logistical backstories. Despite the rumors that have circulated in recent days, the Duke of Sussex will not find hospitality within the walls of Buckingham Palace. What was supposed to be a symbolic reconciliation between the monarch and his youngest son has turned into a bureaucratic and security knot that fuels the distance between Sussex and the Crown.

The heart of the matter lies in an offer that Re Carlo III had initially advanced to his son. Aware of the concerns raised by the Duke regarding the protection of his family, the sovereign had made an internal space available at Buckingham Palace, guaranteeing the highest levels of security already operational for the royal palace. A relaxing gesture that should have been welcomed Harry, Meghan and little Archie and Lilibet.

The security delay at Buckingham Palace

The complex organizational system requested by the duke ended up clashing with the timing of the court organizational machine. According to what emerged from sources close to the palace, Prince Harry spent excessive time defining the security details for his family members before formalizing the acceptance of the invitation. When the duke finally came forward, the leaders of Buckingham Palace had already taken steps to withdraw the offer. The official version that leaks out from royal circles speaks of a lack of adequate notice, an element that made it impossible to finalize the duke’s stay in the sovereign’s official residence.

The indiscretion about Harry’s request

To further complicate the picture, an unconfirmed indiscretion is added: Harry initially raised doubts about the adequacy of the accommodation offered, and then, at a later time, requested to stay in the palace alone, excluding Meghan and her children. A request that arrived too late, when the logistical provisions had already changed.

The reactions of Harry and the Royal Family

Prince Harry’s spokesperson defined the situation as deeply disappointing, underlining that, in his opinion, no clear reason had emerged for the withdrawal of an offer that the duke believed he had already accepted. For their part, Royal Household sources have expressed growing weariness in the face of the Sussexes’ ever-changing travel plans, describing a climate of mutual distrust.

The safety issue remains the fulcrum of distancing. After the defeat suffered last year at theHigh Court in the legal battle to obtain the official taxpayer-funded escort, Harry has repeatedly reiterated the difficulty of visiting his homeland.

At the moment, it appears almost certain that Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five, will not accompany their father to London, also casting doubt on the planned pilgrimage to Althorp, Northamptonshire, to Princess Diana’s tomb. However, the unknown remains as to Meghan Markle’s presence towards the end of the week, on the occasion of the celebration of the first anniversary of the Invictus Games which will be held in Birmingham.

An increasingly distant meeting

With the monarch busy with state commitments and his son who has not yet found a definitive arrangement for this visit, the possibility of a private meeting that many hoped could mend the relationship between the two after years of frost has disappeared. For now, the duke’s return to London takes place far from the palace, in a climate of uncertainty that reflects the complexity of a family dynamic now closely linked to the liturgies of the court and the rigid needs of protocol.
