Ukraine defends itself against German Nord Stream suspicions

Die Federal Prosecutor’s Office in Germany suspects Ukrainian state authorities were behind the attacks. Last week she brought charges against the former Ukrainian officer Serhii K., among other things, for complicity in a war crime. The man is accused of acting on behalf of unspecified Ukrainian state bodies. The suspect Serhii K. was arrested in Italy in August and transferred to Germany in November. He denies the allegations.

Russia in sight

According to German investigators, Serhii K., who was an active officer in the Ukrainian army in 2022, is said to have planned and carried out the attacks together with other military members. The aim was to permanently stop gas deliveries and thus weaken the financing of the Russian war against Ukraine.

The explosions destroyed three of the four strands of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. Nord Stream 1 was an important, direct connection for Russian natural gas exports to Germany and elsewhere in Europe; Nord Stream 2 was not yet operational.
