Tour de France: Belgian wins sprint in Bordeaux

The Belgian Tim Merlier secured the prestigious stage victory in Bordeaux in a sprint at the Tour de France. At the end of the 175.1 kilometer long seventh stage between Hagetmau and the wine metropolis, German tour debutant Max Kanter came fourth. For the 33-year-old Merlier, it is the fourth stage victory in the Tour. Sören Waerenskjold from Norway came second and Eritrean Biniam Girmay third.

Kanter was initially a bit trapped on the long and relatively narrow home straight, but then made it to the front. A small bump from Dorian Godon prevented an even better placing.

The day after his impressive solo ride through the Pyrenees, Tadej Pogacar defended his yellow jersey without any problems. The Slovenian is still 2:42 minutes ahead of Jonas Vingegaard. Germany’s hopeful Florian Lipowitz is seventh. In oppressive heat of up to 36 degrees, two escapees tried their luck, but were never left far away from the peloton and were caught around 18 kilometers from the finish.
