EU analysis calls Russia “most significant security threat”

A new security analysis prepared by EU diplomats sees Russia as the biggest threat to Europe, according to a newspaper report. The country is the “most immediate, significant, direct and long-term security threat to the European continent,” the newspaper quotes World on Sunday from the yet to be published new threat analysis by the European External Action Service (EEAS).

The report sees Russia’s “militarization of society, the move towards a war economy with concrete ambitions in key strategic and technical areas such as space and nuclear matters” as a long-term threat to European security. The document describes the USA as “the most important strategic partner”, which is currently changing its priorities and positions. Citing diplomats, the newspaper also reported that in the non-public, secret part of the document, the verdict on the USA was “significantly more critical”.
