Swimming accidents at the weekend: Girl (14) drowns in the quarry pond

The summer weather once again attracted numerous people to swimming lakes and rivers this weekend. But the trip ended tragically for several swimmers. In the municipality of Groß Kummerfeld (Schleswig-Holstein), a 13-year-old drowned in a quarry pond on Saturday evening.

First, rescue workers went to the lake in the Segeberg district because of a missing 14-year-old. The teenager was found a short time later with alcohol poisoning and taken to a hospital hospital admitted, as a police spokesman said. It was discovered on site that the girl’s 13-year-old friend had disappeared. It was only two hours later that the sad certainty emerged: the young person could only be rescued dead. It is now being determined whether she was also drunk.

Man (24) drowns in Wakenitz

Also on Saturday evening, a man (24) was pulled lifeless from the Wakenitz in Lübeck. The man had previously celebrated with several friends in Drägerpark and then apparently went swimming in the river. His friends reported him missing. After an hour of searching, the emergency services were only able to rescue the man dead.

18 year old missing

It also happened in Bremen on Saturday night Accident: Two friends tried to swim across the Weser. While one reached the bank, the other disappeared into the river. The search for the 18-year-old has so far been unsuccessful.

Large-scale operation at Lake Binsfeld

On the Binsfeldsee in Speyer (Rheinland-Pfalz) there was a dramatic incident early on Saturday afternoon. At around 2:20 p.m., a 37-year-old went under while swimming and never resurfaced. Despite divers working for hours, the man was not found. The criminal police are now investigating and the city has issued a bathing ban as a precautionary measure.

Senior woman goes under

The next mission just a few hours later. In Wörth an der Isar in Lower Bavaria, a 75-year-old woman got into trouble while swimming in a lake. Although she was using an adult flotation device and was able to alert herself to her situation, she sank. First responders brought the woman to shore and immediately tried to revive her – but in vain.

Sad record: 99 swimming deaths in June

Meanwhile, the DLRG announced that at least 99 people drowned nationwide last June – more than ever since 2003. At that time, 107 swimming deaths were counted in the month of June. DLRG President Ute Vogt: “The tragic start to the bathing season gives rise to concern that if further heat waves occur in midsummer, many people could again lose their lives in the water.”
