World Cup idol from 2010: Media: Forlán should temporarily take over Uruguay

The Uruguayan football idol Diego Forlán is supposed to coach his home country’s national team for the time being. The former top striker from Atlético Madrid or Manchester United will initially take over from Marcelo Bielsa, who is leaving the “Celeste” after the embarrassing exit in the preliminary round of the World Cup, until March. This was reported by, among others, the Spanish newspaper “Marca” and also quoted association president Ignacio Alonso.

A decision will then be made about who will fill the position. Forlán (47) will also be in charge of Uruguay’s U20 national team. There was initially no official confirmation.

The former striker was part of the team that reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, where they lost to the Netherlands. In the game for third place, Forlán, Luis Suárez & Co. lost to Germany 2-3. Forlán, who scored five times during the tournament, was voted best player of the tournament.
