Spotify continues to invest in artificial intelligence and begins testing a new feature that transforms the way users interact with the platform. The streaming service is in fact testing “Talk to Spotify”, a conversational assistant that allows Premium subscribers to search, play and explore music, podcasts and audiobooks simply by talking to a chatbot.
The new feature is integrated into the Home screen and Now Playing view of the mobile app. Users can communicate with the assistant either by typing their requests in a dedicated text box or by using the microphone to issue voice commands, making the interaction more immediate and natural.
Unlike traditional recommendation systems, the chatbot exploits the user’s personal listening habits. Playlists created over time, favorite artists, most frequently played songs, and listening history are used to provide contextualized answers. It is therefore possible to ask, for example, when you listened to a certain song for the first time, which musical genres have characterized the last few months or receive suggestions based on your consolidated tastes.
The assistant represents an evolution of previous features based on artificial intelligence, such as Prompted Playlist, which allowed you to generate playlists starting from a simple description. With the new system, however, the conversation becomes dynamic: you can ask to play songs you’ve never heard before, progressively refine the results by indicating specific artists or change the atmosphere of the selection with requests such as “make it more energetic” or “more relaxing”.
In addition to controlling playback, the chatbot is able to answer informative questions about the content available on the platform. While listening to a song it is possible to ask for the year of publication, while for an audiobook you can obtain information on other works by the same author. Podcasts also benefit from integration, allowing you to find out, for example, which other programs a particular guest has appeared on.
With this initiative, Spotify aims to make the platform more personal and flexible, while at the same time trying to improve the quality of recommendations and respond to the criticisms leveled at automatic recommendation algorithms in recent years. The conversational approach brings the service closer to chatbots such as ChatGPT or Gemini, but integrates direct access to the user’s music library and listening data.
The feature is currently available in beta for adult Premium users in the United States, Ireland, and Sweden. The release occurs gradually on iOS and Android devices in English. Spotify specifies that the system is still under development and that the answers generated by the artificial intelligence may not always be accurate.
