An inaugural wrestling tournament between humanoid robots, dubbed Ultimate Robot Knock-out Legend (URKL), debuted this Thursday in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen with bouts that included punches and high kicks and even one contender who continued fighting after losing his head from a blow.

The fight, described by the organizers as the first world competition of this type, pitted the white humanoid robot nicknamed “White Eagle” against its opponent, with similar characteristics but black “Matador”, leaving viral videos of the confrontation in Chinese media and social networks.

Behind the initiative is the robotics company EngineAI, based in Shenzhen, a city known as the Chinese ‘Silicon Valley’ for its concentration of leading technology companies.

The most talked-about moment of the duel, which took place with a live audience, came when one of the robots lost its head after taking a blow and, despite losing the detection functions installed in it, continued fighting, throwing punches and resisting impacts.

A total of 32 teams from around the world were selected to compete, all with the EngineAI T800 humanoid robot – 1.73 meters high and 75 kilograms in weight – as a standardized platform and with the aim of winning the championship belt and a prize pool of 10 million yuan (about 1.48 million dollars).

The organizers stressed to local media that the competition does not focus solely on brute strength, but that the format evaluates the robots in four categories: effective punches, body stability, defensive and evasive ability, and general resistance.

EngineAI founder and CEO Zhao Tongyang explained that the event was designed to create commercial humanoid robot fighting intellectual property with global influence, while driving research and industrialization.

Zhao noted that the tournament will help validate cutting-edge technologies, including mechanical structural balance or intelligent decision-making in milliseconds and multi-modal sensor coordination.

The duel is part of China’s strategy, which has identified these technologies as an area of strategic interest, to promote humanoid robotics as an industry, using tests in real environments to accelerate its development and evaluate its possible application in commercial settings.

This year has left similar examples such as the participation of these machines in the Beijing half marathon, where the autonomous team ‘Qitian Dasheng’ won with a time of 50 minutes and 26 seconds, lowering the mark of the winner of the last edition by almost two hours.
