Argentine agricultural giant goes shopping in Brazil and strengthens its regional presence

Adecoagro, one of the largest agroindustrial companies in Argentina, listed on the Wall Street stock exchange, adds presence in the region after purchasing a sugar and ethanol production plant in Brazil from Raizen for US$ 148 million.

In addition to acquiring the plant, the company founded in 2002 includes the transfer of its own sugar cane and contracts with suppliers linked to the plant.

The company, which was acquired by the crypto giant Tether in 2025, took advantage of the asset sale process that Raizen is going through, a partnership between Cosan and Shell, which in Argentina has already sold the network of Shell service stations and the Dock Sud refinery to Mercuria and José Luis Manzano.

The recent acquisition gives more presence in the region to the company that leads Mariano Bosch. Adecoagro is one of the main agroindustrial companies in South Americawith operations in Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay, in a business that covers the production of grains, rice, peanuts, sunflower and dairy, as well as sugar, ethanol and renewable energy.

In December 2025, it also became one of the main urea producers in the region after the purchase of Profertil by acquiring the shares of YPF and Nutrien in the Bahía Blanca plant, which they are analyzing to expand.

Company shares on Wall Street they rose 1%. For Claudio Maulhardt, from Galileo FCI, the acquisition of the Mato Grosso plant from Raizen will add “around 25% to Adecoagro’s processing capacity.” “(Adecoagro) finds a motivated seller, in need of cash, and adds a cheap asset to its portfolio,” the financial analyst said through the social network X.
