The killer whales blew up the fish

The whale, which is about seven meters long, has almost no natural enemies, unless you count humans.

The killer whale doesn’t even have to be afraid of the great white shark, which is the world’s largest predatory fish. The killer whale likes the shark’s liver in particular.

Now researchers have documented a brand new way killer whales have come up with to amuse themselves.

A larger-than-human disc-shaped pufferfish serves as a plaything. It can weigh a couple of tons.

Investigators witnessed two incidents, both of which were recorded on video.

The first video shows a female killer whale holding the rear fin of an already dead pufferfish with her mouth.

After that, the male whale accelerates itself to a wild speed, and the female lets go of the carcass.

The dog hits the pufferfish with such force that it literally explodes into a thousand pieces. The end result resembles a bun dissolved in water.

The loud bang caused by the collision can also be heard on the video.

The almost full-grown chick who was watching the show next to him finally starts eating the remains of the fish.

Second the situation caught on video is similar to the first one, but now there are two female killer whales and a baby.

This time too, the puffer fish is destined to explode into atoms in the sea.

According to researchers, whales’ actions can have many different purposes.

It may be that it is easier for chicks to munch on blockfish when it is first pounded into smaller pieces of “baby food”.

Adult whales were not observed eating smaller remains of fish on either occasion.

Another equally likely option is that destroying pufferfish is purely a pastime for killer whales.

So far, scientists are not sure if some of the whales in the videos are the same. Both incidents were filmed in the Gulf of California.
