What Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang wrote in his first post on X

The CEO of Nvidia Jensen Huang posted his first message on X to support AI models open-weight and relaunch an open letter signed by 25 companies and organizations in the sector, which calls on US policymakers not to introduce blanket restrictions on this technology. “AI will transform every industry, power every company, and be developed by every country,” Huang wrote. “Open models strengthen security and cybersecurity, accelerate innovation and diffusion, and foster sovereignty.”

The letter, entitled “Open Weights and American AI Leadership”argues that U.S. leadership in AI “will not be judged by a single frontier model, but by the ability to build a strong, open ecosystem that spreads across every sector of the economy.” According to the signatories, open-weight models, which can be downloaded, inspected, modified and run on their own infrastructure, allow startups, enterprises, universities and institutions to develop AI applications without having to depend on a few large suppliers, promoting competition, innovation and cost reduction.

Security and transparency of open models

The paper also rejects the idea that open models are inherently less secure than proprietary ones. On the contrary, he argues that the ability to publicly review them allows us to more quickly identify vulnerabilities, improve cyber defenses and increase transparency. “The correct response is not to ban open weights,” the letter reads.

The timing is not coincidental. About a year ago the government supported open source models in the AI ​​Action Plan, going so far as to define them as a strategic resource for the country. Now the authorities are considering introducing restrictions on Kimi K3 and other Chinese models. Kimi K3, launched on July 16 by the Chinese company Moonshot AI, has 2.8 trillion parameters and ranks among the best in the world, both among open source and proprietary models. The concern is not new. Already in January 2025, a low-cost model from the Chinese DeepSeek had shaken Nvidia, which lost almost 600 billion dollars in capitalization in a single day. A record at the time.

AI and intellectual property

A passage is also dedicated to distillationthe technique by which one model is trained using the outputs of another. The signatories define it as a tool widely used to improve and evaluate models, but distinguish it from illicit uses. Any infringements of intellectual property, they underline, should be addressed with targeted legal and commercial interventions, avoiding generalized restrictions that would risk slowing down innovation.
