Möhnesee (North Rhine-Westphalia): Two injured! Tree falls on teenager during storm

Soest (North Rhine-Westphalia) – The sun was shining in the morning, but by the afternoon, strong winds and rain had arrived. At the popular Möhnesee lake in North Rhine-Westphalia, two young men were struck by a tree and seriously injured. As confirmed by the local fire department, they were at the lake with a group of seven teenagers when a severe storm hit. The two teenagers, aged 18 and 19, were taken to a hospital with serious injuries, as confirmed to BILD by the police.

The accident occurred in the diving area. Christian Böddeker, head of the Möhnesee fire department, reported that the group was in a wooded area when the storm hit. The wind became gusty, and heavy rain fell. Two people from the group were hit by a falling branch, according to the incident commander.

A broken tree trunk lies at the lake. It is still unclear whether this injured the teenagers.

When the fire department arrived, a complex rescue operation began. Böddeker described the terrain as “very difficult to access.” Fortunately, no one was trapped under the tree. Emergency services were able to provide immediate care to the injured. Numerous emergency personnel were required.

The fire chief told the “Soester Anzeiger”: “We needed ten people just to carry one patient.” Since it was unclear beforehand how the patients would need to be rescued, boats were also on standby.

The two injured individuals have since been taken to a hospital. Emergency chaplains provided support to the other teenagers and their families. Information regarding the exact condition of the two injured individuals is not yet available.
