Contracting gonorrhea after oral sex with a one-night stand.

Hanoi – During his first sexual encounter with a woman he met on Facebook, using a condom and engaging in oral sex, a 30-year-old man experienced painful urination and vaginal discharge, and was later unexpectedly diagnosed with gonorrhea.

On July 28th, Dr. Nguyen The Thinh, from the Department of Urology and Andrology at E Hospital in Hanoi, reported that the patient came for examination noticing a stronger-than-normal pungent odor in his genital area, followed by persistent yellowish discharge from the tip of his penis for several days, swelling of the urethral opening, and increasingly painful urination.

The doctor suspected acute urethritis due to a sexually transmitted infection and ordered a PCR test on a urine sample, which came back positive for gonorrhea bacteria.

The man stated that a few weeks prior, he had met a woman on Facebook. Initially, they only exchanged messages, then went to a motel. He used a condom and thought he was completely safe, but they also engaged in oral sex. The patient was worried and didn’t know how to explain it to his wife. The doctor believed that although he carefully used a condom, he was careless during oral sex and contracted a sexually transmitted disease from this extramarital affair. The patient was treated with antibiotics according to the prescribed regimen and abstained from sexual intercourse during treatment.

Oral sex is the act of stimulating a partner’s genitals with the mouth, lips, and tongue. This act seems safer than penetrative intercourse, but many sexually transmitted diseases can be transmitted through oral sex, such as gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, genital warts, herpes, hepatitis A, B, C, and HIV…

“When engaging in oral sex, men often don’t use condoms because they think they won’t get infected. However, pathogens such as gonorrhea bacteria and HIV can be transmitted from the partner’s throat to wounds on the penis,” the doctor said.

Gonorrhea is caused by the bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae. This type of bacteria commonly appears in the vagina, cervix, eyes, mouth, anus, and especially in the urethra of men. The disease can occur at any age, but is common in men and women of reproductive age.

The most common sign in men is penile discharge due to infection. The amount of pus varies depending on the severity of the infection. Gonorrhea can affect the rectum, causing anal itching and bleeding; some people experience diarrhea and pain during urination. When the infection spreads to surrounding areas such as the scrotum and testicles, men risk developing epididymitis accompanied by groin pain, leading to infertility.

Unlike men, women with gonorrhea often have no specific symptoms, so it is frequently overlooked or mistaken for common gynecological diseases. In severe cases, symptoms appear such as painful urination, green or yellow discharge from the urethra and cervix, and an unusual foul odor in the genital area.

Doctors recommend maintaining fidelity to one partner. This is the best way to prevent sexually transmitted diseases. Oral sex should be avoided if you have sores or gum inflammation. Prevent semen from coming into contact with your mouth, and stop oral sex just before ejaculation. Use a condom during oral sex.
