Trump threatens Iran again: “Last chance before beheading”

According to Trump’s account, the talks revolve around opening the Strait of Hormuz, which is central to international gas and oil trade. The aim is therefore to fully open the strait by this Tuesday. The second phase should then be about the “denuclearization” of Iran – that will take longer, Trump admitted. According to his account, the 80-year-old Republican canceled the largest attack by the US military “since World War II” in order to enable new negotiations with Iran.

However, Iran’s Foreign Office spokesman Ismail Baghai initially only provided information about bilateral negotiations between his country and Oman about a joint temporary shipping corridor in the Strait of Hormuz. However, an agreement with the neighboring country is not enough to reopen the waterway. As long as the US “aggression” continues, the situation will not change, it goes on to say.

Trump: Iran “double-faced”

Trump then accused Iran of dishonesty on his Truth Social platform. The Iranian leadership is “double-faced” when it claims that there are no talks with the USA to end the war, Trump wrote. He later said: “Whether Iran wants to admit it or not, we are actually talking about a solution to a problem that they have created for decades.” He was referring to the Iranian nuclear program. Iran will “never” have nuclear weapons, he reiterated. Trump also announced a continuation of the naval blockade against Iran. The US Army will block Iranian ports until there is “an agreement or a complete surrender” by Tehran.

So far no solution and no end to the war in sight

Trump spoke of the “outlines of an agreement” that were emerging. However, with this representation he stands alone in the field. The central issues in dispute – control over shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and the fate of Iran’s nuclear program – are extremely complex and the interests of the parties to the conflict are conflicting.

There are currently no discussions with the USA. There are also no plans to receive representatives of the Washington government or to send a delegation in these days, said Baghaei. All Iranian negotiators were currently in their homeland. The only exception is Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, who is on a pilgrimage in Iraq. According to a senior Iranian insider, Araqchi will not be available for negotiations until at least the end of the week.

Separate discussions with Oman

Baghaei stressed at a televised press conference that the only ongoing talks were those with Oman over the management of the Strait of Hormuz. This is about shipping routes. However, this has nothing to do with talks about a general opening of the strait. “That is a separate discussion.” An agreement with Oman is also not enough to completely open the sea route.

The Strait of Hormuz is a particularly important strait in the Persian Gulf for oil and gas transport and lies between Iran and Oman. Before the start of the Iran war, almost 20 percent of global oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the waterway, which Iran has largely closed. The war against Iran was started at the end of February by Iran’s arch-enemies Israel and the USA. In mid-June, the United States and the Islamic Republic agreed on a framework agreement, but it has since been scrapped. Further details should be worked out within a transition period of 60 days. However, there were doubts about the viability of the agreement from the start – and since then there have been repeated violent mutual attacks.

Since the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices have risen sharply, which is also leading to higher fuel costs in the USA and is putting pressure on Trump just a few months before the congressional elections. The president said on Sunday aboard the presidential plane Air Force One: “Would I prefer an agreement? I’m not out to kill people.” Hopes for relaxation as a result of Trump’s announcement caused oil prices to fall: North Sea Brent oil fell in price by more than four percent to around $84 per barrel.
