Spain, Italy’s border control decree issued today: borders monitored until September 7th.

Spain is reintroducing border controls for travelers arriving from Italy. The measure, effective yesterday, was formalized today with its publication in the Spanish Official Gazette and affects passenger flights and sea connections arriving directly from Italy. It will remain in effect, unless revoked early, until September 7.

According to the Spanish government, the measure “conforms to the principles of necessity and effectiveness, as it identifies the objective of minimizing the risks arising from migratory pressure from the central Mediterranean and the Italian Republic’s deficiencies in implementing the new European rules on asylum responsibility.”

Checks began yesterday at Spanish airports and ports for scheduled airliners whose last port of departure was in Italy before arriving in Spain, and for passenger ships and ferries departing from an Italian port. On the first day of checks, according to official data, document checks were carried out on 199 people from third countries arriving from Italy on 12 flights. “The measure will be subject to ongoing evaluation and will be revoked before the scheduled date once the threats that motivated its adoption have subsided,” the ministry stated, emphasizing that there can be no automatic extension.
