Araghchi announced that there will be no negotiations with the US as long as the “interim agreement is violated”

Iran and the United States are not negotiating, and Tehran is not going to start negotiations as long as “Washington violates the interim agreement signed in June,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said today, adding that messages are being exchanged between the sides through mediators.

Araghchi reiterated Iran’s position that the agreement between Tehran and Muscat on the Strait of Hormuz is in the “final stages” but does not envisage the reopening of the strategically important waterway.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) also said today that it would not reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which is vital to the global economy, unless the United States meets Tehran’s conditions, including a demand for compensation for damages caused by the war.

Iran’s National Security Advisor Mohammad Bagher Zoelghadr on Tuesday presented a number of demands for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, including an end to “the war and aggression against Iran and its allies in Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen and Iraq.”

According to the Tasnim news agency, he also demanded the lifting of the US blockade of Iranian ports, the lifting of sanctions, the unfreezing of Iran’s frozen assets and compensation for damages caused by the war.

A US official recently told Reuters that progress had been made in talks between Oman and Iran over the Strait of Hormuz, and “an agreement is expected to be reached soon.”

The official noted that the US would lift its blockade of Iranian ports after an agreement is announced to restore unhindered commercial shipping.
