“Why do you want to keep themonsterstill open? We are afraid of becoming angels”. It is the summary of a video message onex Ilva(the term “monster” refers to the steelworks) addressed to the governor of Puglia,Antonio Decaroby a child from Taranto, Andrea, 13 years old, suffering from arare disease. The boy is also among the citizens of Taranto who have appealed against the former Ilva toCourt of Appeal of Milanasking for it to stop. And last July 27, with a decree, the Court ordered the closure of the hot area of the steelworks within 90 days, which in reality is now even less than 80.

“Due to my health problem – the boy tells Decaro -, I know the Taranto ward where children and young people like me are treated, some have lost all their hair, others I have never seen again, my mother told me that they are angels now, but I know what it means, I’m grown up now”. The fear of the boy’s family is that now the Region could possibly support the extraordinary appeal to theCourt of Cassationthat the former Ilva intends to undertake against the decree of the Court of Appeal on the shutdown of the factory, a support that the Minister of Business would have hoped for in one of the last summits at Mimit,Adolfo Urso.

Decarohe saw the boy’s video message and then contacted the family.

Decaro’s promise

“Dear Andrea – declared the president ofPuglia region-, I promise you that I will deliver your letter on August 21st into the hands of the Government representatives who can help us and who will be atTarantofor a great party which, I hope, you will want to participate with us. We will explain to them your reasons and what together we want to do for Taranto. We will explain to them that there are factories that do not pollute and that do not make people sick. We will explain to them that they must help us fight the monsters and find jobs for many other people whose children must continue to live in Taranto without being afraid to breathe.”
