Mark Zuckerberg rejects “centralizing artificial superintelligence” amid competition with China, OpenAI and Anthropic

In a lengthy essay published Monday on the future of AI, Zuckerberg called for the United States to compete against China and avoid “government tyranny” over this set of technologies.

Likewise, ensuring that artificial “superintelligence” is available to everyone.

Its competitors OpenAI and Anthropic largely focus on closed AI models.

Meta has invested billions of dollars in its AI division, known as Meta Superintelligence Labs, as it tries to catch up with OpenAI and Anthropic, creators of ChatGPT and Claude, respectively.

The trial accompanied the launch of a new model that can run on a personal computer.

Zuckerberg announced in a video on Instagram on Monday that his company would open up the parameters of its latest AI model, allowing it to be downloaded by the public.

Parameters are the calculations or rules that determine how an AI system behaves.

The executive said Meta would also launch a new class of open source AI models, designed to run on a laptop.

“Instead of centralizing superintelligence, we should distribute it widely and give each person the ability to direct it,” Zuckerberg said.

He took aim at firms that are “focused on creating AI for companies, governments or other institutions,” arguing that this would tip the balance in favor of entities rather than individuals.

Zuckerberg added that foreign AI labs have an advantage over American ones, which must comply with restrictions on training data.

“I don’t think restricting access to foreign open source models is an effective solution,” he said.

“Our goal should be for American open source models to be the best in the world. That requires removing the obstacles that make it difficult for American open source models to compete,” he concluded.

Developers in China, including Alibaba, DeepSeek and Moonshot, have created advanced and more affordable open models in recent months, prompting American companies to lower prices and build their own cheaper models.

Zuckerberg’s essay was released amid debate in the United States about how to regulate AI developers, as well as growing local resistance to the construction of data centers that power this technology.

Given this, Meta will launch a $1 billion fund to directly support the communities around its facilities, a spokesperson told AFP.
