Italian double at the European Championships with Fabbri and Weir in the shot put

Leonardo Fabbri and Zane Weir they score a historic double in the shot put at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham. For Fabbri it is about second consecutive gold after that of Rome 2024. ‘Leo’ won with 22.31 metres. For Weir, gold in 2023 at the European Games in Polandsilver was won with 21.12, a measurement obtained on the first throw.

For Italy it is the fourth double in throws at the continental event after those in the album signed by Adolfo Consolini-Giuseppe Tosi in Oslo ’46, Brussels ’50 and Bern ’54.

Eleven blue doubles (two blue hat-tricks).

More generally, Leonardo Fabbri and Zane Weir achieved the eleventh double (among them there are also two hat-tricks) for Italy’s men’s team in history. The first ones are those signed by discus throw pair Adolfo Consolini-Giuseppe Tosi (Oslo 1946, Brussels 1950, Bern 1954). The historic hat-trick followed 10,000 meters in Stuttgart in 1986 with Stefano Mei, now president of Fidal, precede Alberto Cova and Salvatore Antibo. Again in the German city, a double in marathon with Gelindo Bordin cousin and Orlando Pizzolato second. Four years later in Split, Bordin scored an encore this time ahead of Gianni Poli.

In 1994 in Helsinki he scored a double in the 3000m steeplechase with Alessandro Lambruschini won ahead of Angelo Carosi. In Budapest in 1998, second hat-trick, with Stefano Baldini triumphing in the marathon ahead of Danilo Goffi and Vincenzo Modica. Two years ago at the Olimpico in Rome, he scored a double in the 100 metres Marcell Jacobs- Chituru Ali and in the half marathon thanks to Yeman Crippa, gold, and Pietro Riva, silver. For the women there were two doubles, both in the race walk, in 1998 in the 10 kilometers with Annarita Sidoti ahead of Erica Alfridi and in 2024 in Rome with Antonella Palmisano winner ahead of Valentina Trapletti.

Fabbri: “I hope you liked the crown”

“I wanted to do a growing race. I’m very happy because coming home with the gold is beautiful. I had a great time“, commented Fabbri at the end of the race. We proved that we are the strongest in Europe and today we confirmed it. Finishing the season without the European title it would have been a disappointment“, he said. Then he added: “We hope you liked the crown… I was hoping for a little better, anyway…”.
