The conflict that became public at the weekend between the best Austrian players and the Austrian Ice Hockey Association (ÖEHV) continues to smolder. The women’s national team is down to 21 players on Monday Tournament in Slovakia traveled, however, the majority of top performers have cancelled. Eleven players have drawn the consequences after no solution was found with the association.
The players supported by the younion sports union are demanding fair and professional conditions for the women’s national team and submitted nine written suggestions for improvement to the association in March. They continue to wait for binding solutions three days after the crisis became known. “There were again numerous discussions, justifications and attempts at persuasion. But the players are still waiting for concrete written commitments or suggestions. They don’t even care about the media outcry,” the players’ union wrote on Tuesday and criticized the reliability of the managing director in particular Alexander HelwigVice President Yasmin Stepina and general manager Martin Kogler. “An incomplete squad at a senior national team training camp must be a sign for those responsible,” explained Sascha Tomanek from the ice hockey players UNION in the younion _ The Daseinsunion and asked himself why the players were “now split between two hotels again”.
Other players joined in
That captain Anna MeixnerAmerican legionnaire Theresa Schafzahl or veterans like Antonia Matzka, Charlotte Wittich and Annika Fazokas will be missing from the course three months before taking part in an A World Championship for the first time and even one World Cup boycott threaten, it had been clear for days. Now other players joined in.
Goalkeeper Selma Luggin, a key player in the promotion tournament, was not even invited. “After I didn’t reach head coach (Alexander) Bröms for days to ask why I wasn’t called up, it was explained to my colleagues at the weekend that they already knew my qualities and therefore wanted to give other goalkeepers a chance. Three months from the A World Cup, at a camp with a new goalie coach (Pierre Groulx) and after Joey Vollmer (note: previous goalkeeper coach) had to leave without explanation,” Luggin said in the younion broadcast quoted.
Test matches in Slovakia
Without half of the regular team, the national team will play test matches in Bardejov against Slovakia (Thursday), the Netherlands (Friday) and Italy (Saturday). The association also wants to use the week for dialogue. “The ÖEHV is not interested in escalation, but rather in constructive discussions and solutions in the interests of Austrian ice hockey,” the association said in a press release. “Just as important to me (as the current course) is the open exchange with the players – I am convinced that together we can create a good basis for the future of women’s ice hockey,” Stepina is quoted as saying.
The women who were critical of the association leadership received support from Marco Rossi. “Anyone who represents our country and gives everything for this sport deserves respect, appreciation and the best possible support – regardless of whether it is among women, men or young talent. Especially for the next generation, we have to work together to ensure that Austrian ice hockey develops in the right direction. You have my full support!”, explained the NHL striker.
The ZiB2 commented on Tuesday evening Antonia Matzka, Defender on the women’s national ice hockey team. Matzka said the prerequisite for participation is an agreement with the association. It is important “that the demands for the new improvement points” are also presented in writing. The players could then decide “whether this is a prerequisite for us to take up the sporting aspect again in November”.
Demand for equal treatment
Pay is particularly important. Matzka demands “the same pay as the men in the form of a daily allowance”. Men would be paid for national team camps and tournaments, but women have not yet been paid. Although a regulation has been announced from 2027, there are no specific amounts yet.
She also criticized the association’s treatment of the players. The trust in the management level in the Austrian Ice Hockey Association has been lost. There needs to be discussions “at eye level”.
Criticism of organization
Matzka also addressed organizational problems. Better hotels, food and uniform team clothing were mentioned. “We can’t appear uniform and professional,” she said.
The team player also criticized the marketing of women’s ice hockey. A tournament in Klagenfurt was hardly advertised. “Then you can’t be surprised that there are a lack of ratings and that no one comes into the hall.”
