NASA is preparing for the launch of its next-generation observatory, the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is scheduled for Sunday. This powerful instrument, the successor to the famous Hubble, promises a revolution in our understanding of the cosmos, with the primary goals of exploring dark energy, dark matter and the hunt for thousands of new exoplanets. But just as fascinating as the telescope’s mission is the story of the woman whose name it bears – a pioneer who fought against prejudice to pave the way for women in science and change NASA’s view of the stars forever.
Who was Nancy Grace Roman, the “mother of Hubble”?
Nancy Grace Roman (1925 – 2018) was an American astronomer and the first woman to reach an executive position within NASA, and she was remembered in scientific circles under the well-deserved nickname “Mother of Hubble”. Her passion for stars was born in her childhood in Nashville, Tennessee, where she grew up. As a girl, she showed an exceptional interest in astronomy. Despiteč despite the systematic discouragement she faced in an educational system that considered science an exclusively male domain, her determination did not waver.
She persevered on her path and in 1949 received her doctorate in astronomy at the University of Chicago. Before joining the newly founded NASA in 1959, she worked at the Naval Research Laboratory. At NASA, she became the first head of the astronomy division, where she established the agency’s overall space astronomy program. Her key role was in planning and championing the project that would later become known as the Hubble Space Telescope. It was she who gathered astronomers and engineers, convinced Congress of the importance of the project and laid the foundations for the world’s most famous observatory. In recognition of her immeasurable contributions, in May 2020 NASA officially renamed the then Wide Field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST) the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope.
A successor with a view a hundred times wider than Hubble’s
The launch of the Roman telescope is planned from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, and it will be carried into orbit by the powerful SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket. Its final destination is the second Lagrange point (L2) of the Sun-Earth system, a gravitationally stable place approximately 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, where it will be able to observe deep space unhindered. Although it shares one key characteristic with Hubble – a primary mirror with a diameter of 2.4 meters – the similarities end there. Romano’s main strength lies in his main instrument, the Wide Field Instrument (WFI).
This instrument has a field of view that, depending on the infrared spectrum, is between one and two hundred times larger than that of Hubble. This seemingly technical specification means a real revolution in practice. While Hubble’s gaze was focused on relatively small, specific parts of the sky, Roman can capture vast cosmic panoramas in one frame. This will enable him to map vast areas of the universe in a significantly shorter time, creating unprecedentedly detailed and wide images that will encompass billions of galaxies and stars.
The search for dark matter and thousands of new worlds
The main scientific goals of the Roman telescope mission delve into the greatest mysteries of contemporary cosmology. One of the key tasks will be investigating the nature of dark energy, the mysterious force that causes the accelerated expansion of the universe, and mapping the distribution of dark matter, the invisible substance that makes up most of the mass in the universe. The novel will explore how galaxies and cosmic structures formed and evolved over time, providing data key to understanding these fundamental forces.
The second pillar of the mission is the search for exoplanets. Thanks to its wide field of view, Roman can track hundreds of millions of stars at the same time, which makes it ideal for detecting planets using the gravitational microlens method. It is expected to discover and study thousands of new worlds, from gas giants to rocky Earth-like planets. In addition to the WFI, the telescope is also equipped with a Coronagraph Instrument (CGI). Riječ is about a technology demonstration designed to directly image Jupiter-sized planets by blocking the blinding light of their parent stars. The success of this technology will pave the way for future missions that could directly record and analyze the atmospheres of Earth-like planets.
A supplement, not a replacement, for the legendary telescopes
It is important to emphasize that the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is not intended as a replacement for Hubble or the James Webb Space Telescope, but rather; as their complement. While Hubble and Webb focus on in-depth and detailed observations of specific, pre-selected targets, Roman’s role will be to conduct broad surveys of the sky. It will identify the most interesting objects and phenomena – from distant supernovae to potentially habitable exoplanets – which Webb and future telescopes will then be able to study in more detail. His work will create a huge database that will serve astronomers for decades, providing an unprecedented statistical sample of the structure and evolution of the universe. The ability to explore billions of galaxies and discover thousands of new planets makes it a key part of the future of space astronomy.
