Call to all parties. Antonio Guterres referred to the Armenian prisoners held in Azerbaijan

Why does the UN not pressurize Baku to release the Armenian prisoners? Answering this question at the press conference held today in Yerevan, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres appealed to “all parties”.

“We call on all parties to implement all the provisions of the peace agreement as quickly as possible, which also, of course, includes detained persons,” said Guterres, who arrived in Yerevan to participate in COP 17 at the UN Biodiversity Conference.

The peace treaty signed in Washington last year does not contain a prisoner clause.

19 Armenian prisoners are currently held in Azerbaijani prisons, they were sentenced to 15 years to life imprisonment. Trials in Azerbaijan, known for gross violations of human rights, take place behind closed doors, with the absence of international observers and media.

The UN Secretary General also expressed hope that the Armenian-Azerbaijani agreement will be signed quickly. – “I am a big supporter of the peace agreement. I hope that the peace agreement will be quickly translated into action and all existing problems will be solved, which are really painful.”

Earlier today, in the meeting with Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, Antonio Guterres emphasized the establishment of peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

“Armenia has shown extraordinary diplomatic ability, performing miracles, uniting different opinions and points of view. In all the fields where the COP works: biodiversity, climate, the quality of Armenian leadership and diplomacy really stands out,” said the UN Secretary General.
