Dungeons & Dragons, Netflix is developing a series about Ravenloft

Netflix is developing a new series set in Ravenloft, one of the most famous and beloved Dungeons & Dragons settings. The project, reported by Deadline, involves executive producer Alfonso Cuarón and screenwriter and executive producer John August, in collaboration with Hasbro Entertainment. The announcement comes just a few months after the update dedicated to the setting, Ravenloft: The Horrors Within, released earlier this year.

According to what reported by Deadline, the series will reconstruct the genesis of Strahd von Zarovich, the famous vampire Darklord who for decades has represented one of the most iconic villains in the D&D universe. At the center of the narrative will be his transformation from tragic nobleman to undead creature, a path marked by power, love and obsession that has made the character a cult figure among role-players.

The news, however, also brings with it a downsizing of Netflix plans related to the world of Dungeons & Dragons. In fact, Deadline reports that the platform has abandoned the development of the live-action series dedicated to the Forgotten Realms, announced about a year and a half ago with Shawn Levy and Drew Crevello involved in the project. It therefore remains to be seen whether the Ravenloft series will manage to avoid the same fate and actually reach production.
